The association was established in Singapore on 3 October 1981 in Seletar West. Its mission of providing budding aquarium entrepreneurs valuable tips in forming their companies and know-how in breeding technology has made the association a renowned centre for aquarium fishes in the international arena.

The industry has made rapid progress with changing times and new market demands. The relevant authority has even designated the setting up of agrotechnology farm in the eastern part of Singapore at Loyang and Lim Chu Kang. Thereon, the focus of the aquarium fish industry has shifted towards continuing quality improvement of fishes bred and sold. Singapore Ornamental Fish industry has been endorsed by the Prime Minister of Singapore as a knowledge-based industry in 1999.

Singapore's efficient communications network and freight services, coupled with the excellent production facilities of Singapore exporters and their rate grade services leave many international buyers with strong impression.
